Gary Hustwit’s latest will be at the Plaza on Tuesday, November 8 at 7 pm. Trailer
Helvetica and Objectified were both great.
This fascinating design documentary captures the personality and work process of the late Canadian graphic artist Jim Rimmer (1931-2010).
I watched the trailer, read the blurbs, and immediately went for my credit card. Looks great, and the personal DVD order includes a piece of metal cast type to boot.
Douglas Trumball is working on a documentary on the making of the greatest movie ever made. Second one down, under “All Videos”.
Can’t wait to see this one. Thanks to Daring Fireball and Coudal Partners for the link.
Five years ago I began work on my first documentary, Helvetica, which looked at the worlds of typography and graphic design, and their impact on our visual environment. After Helvetica was released in 2007, I had the idea for a second film, Objectified, which focused on industrial design and product design, and our relationship with the manufactured objects that surround us. While working on Objectified, I realized I wanted to make a third film that would also examine how design affects our lives, and began thinking of the films as a “design trilogy” of sorts.
The third documentary in this trilogy is about the design of cities. Urbanized looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design, featuring some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers.
"— Urbanized - Looking forward to it. Helvetica and Objectified were both fantastic (though I wish Objectified had been more focused).
grain edit · Visual Acoustics Film - The Modernism of Julius Shulman : I’ve blogged about this film before, but it bears repeating now that they have an Atlanta screening in the cards for December at the Plaza. I’m convinced from the photograph above that Kubrick had to have been a fan. Look at any interior shot from 2001 for the connection.
I’m afraid it’s going to be horribly sensationalist, but I can’t help being interested in seeing restored WWII footage in HD.
The Visual Language Of Herbert Matter | a documentary film by Reto Caduff :
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE OF HERBERT MATTER is a revealing look at the fascinating life story of the highly influential mid-century modern design master. Known as a quintessential designer’s designer, Swiss born Herbert Matter is largely credited with expanding the use of photography as a design tool and bringing the semantics of fine art into the realm of applied arts.
